FALL
Fall is a great time to experience the Mammoth area. You can do many of the same activities of summer, but without the crowds. Often lodging rates are cheaper and the FALL COLORS are magnificent. Mono County mountains and valleys offer vivid displays to rival Vermont in September & October when the leaves change color. Leaves display brilliant and intense colors. Aspens, willows and cottonwoods feature vibrant hues of orange, gold and red signaling the approach of winter. Make sure to keep an eye on the weather forecast. Eastern Sierra fall weather can be very unpredictable and change quickly.

Backpacking
You can backpack from Mammoth to just about anywhere in the Sierras you could possibly want to go. Discover the natural beauty of Yosemite National Park, John Muir and Ansel Adams wilderness areas. Enjoy lush alpine meadows, jagged granite skylines, and clear high country lakes. Permits are required. Pick one up at the Forest Service station in Mammoth Lakes.

Bodie State Historic Park
Here you'll see what's left of Bodie. An original ghost town from the late 1800's, Bodie stands today in a state of "arrested decay". So coined by the State of California when they took over the town in 1962 to make it a State Historic Park. Once the snow comes, the park is open, but it usually does require some form of snow transportation.

Camping
There are over 800 campsites available in the Mammoth Lakes area. Located in California's beautiful Eastern Sierra, the Inyo National Forest offers campers clean air, crystal blue skies, mountain lakes and streams, challenging trails, high mountain peaks, and beautiful views. Most campgrounds close some time between Mid-October to November.

Devils Postpile
National Monument
Established in 1911 by presidential proclamation, Devils Postpile National Monument protects and preserves the Devils Postpile formation, the 101-foot high Rainbow Falls, and pristine mountain scenery. Devils Postpile is a rare sight in the geologic world and ranks as one of the world’s finest examples of columnar basalt. Its columns tower 60 feet high and display an unusual symmetry. The monument officially closed on October 30 for the 2008 season. Weather permitting, the monument is usually open until October 31.

Fishing
Throughout the Eastern Sierra you can find just about any kind of fishing experience you are looking for. Whether you are on a family trip, a serious fisherman, are fishing to relax or anything between, the Eastern Sierra offers many choices. From alpine lakes, to boulder hopping streams, to rivers meandering through treeless meadow, you will find it here. The fishing season in Mono County ends November 15th of every year, however, the catch and release fisheries of the Upper Owens River above the Benton Bridge to Big Springs, the East Walker River below Bridgeport Reservoir, and Hot Creek, will remain open year round.

Golf
At 8,000 feet above sea level, Sierra Star Golf Course is the highest golf course in California. Sierra Star has snow-capped peaks in every direction, winding mountain streams, lush wildflowers, and fairways lined with Jeffrey pines. Snowcreek Resort Golf Course is nestled between the Sherwin Mountain Range and Mammoth Mountain Ski Area. You can only imagine the beautiful 360-degree vistas enjoyed from every hole on our course. Snowcreek is a public resort nine-hole golf course.

Hiking
In the fall, the Mammoth area provides easy access for day hikers to interesting geological formations and spectacular fall colors. Notice the hawks swooping, the grouse scuttling, leaves displaying brilliant and intense colors. There are a LOT of places to day hike and walk in the Mammoth area. Below are a few of the good ones.

Horseback Riding
Another great way to see Mammoth's scenic landscape is by horseback. Local pack outfitters offer hour-long, half and full-day rides as well as week-long excursions into the Ansel Adams and John Muir wilderness areas. Road & Mountain Biking
Road bikers have plenty of asphalt routes to choose from, be it peddling around town, gearing down to puff up Minaret Road to the Mammoth Mountain Main Lodge and on up to the breathtaking Minaret Vista, or cruising the scenic stretches of U.S. Highway 395. Grab your mountain bike and test your suspension on the Inyo National Forest's vast network of trails and unpaved roads. Rock Creek is home to Sand Canyon and Lower Rock Creek, two of the most insane rides in the region.
